The aim of the course:
Learning the theory and practice of cartography and map projections.

Upon successful completion of the course, the students will be able to :

Contents of the Course
Introduction to cartography and basic concepts, size and shape of the Earth; Geoid, reference ellipsoid and datum concepts, Introduction to Map Projections, Geographic coordinate system concepts, Distortion in map projections, Spherical Trigonometry, Spherical polar coordinate system, Special curves on the Earth, Reductions in map projection, Zone transformations, Map indexing with Geographic Coordinates, Cartographic visualization, Classification of Maps, Topographic maps and representation of heights, contour lines, Scale and Cartographic Generalization, Online Mapping Systems.

 Week 2Earth's size and shape / Geoid, reference ellipsoid, datums.
 Week 3Map projections / What is a map projection? Geographical coordinate system concepts; great and small circles.
 Week 4Distortion in map projections / Distortion ellipses, length, directional and area distortions.
 Week 5Classification of map projections. Plane projections.
 Week 6Inclined plane projections and related basic concepts; Spherical Trigonometry / Spherical polar coordinate system. Spherical Triangles, Special curves on the Earth.
 Week 7Cylindrical projections; Length-preserving and conformal projections, Reductions in map projection.
 Week 8UTM Projection-1; UTM definition, distance, angle and area calculations from UTM coordinates. UTM Projection-2; Coordinate transformations between UTM zones.
 Week 9Mid-term exam
 Week 10UTM Projection-2; Projection coordinate system, coordinate transformations between UTM zones.
 Week 11Map Sheet Division-1; Sheet indexing by geographical coordinates.
