FOUNDATION & HISTORY  
Subdivision was established in 1982 to help increase the number of staff members in different social areas, and to educate researchers to serve in various institutions in the country. Research and education in the subdivision are divided into mean fields including economic development and international economics, economic theory, economic policy and economic history. In order to succeed in this programme, students should have the ability of analytical thinking.
QUALIFICATION AWARDED  
The students who have successfully completed a minimum of 24 local credits (equivalant to 60 ECTS credits) from thought courses delivered within the graduate programme of the department and in related fields, achieved a CGPA of at least 3.00 out of 4.00 and prepared and successfully defended a thesis are given given Doctor of Philosophy Degree (Ph.D) in ECONOMICS.

ADMISSION & REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS

- Students admitted to the program from outside the field are required to attend the Scientific Preparation Program and be successful in the courses determined based on their graduation status.
OBJECTIVE of THE PROGRAMME  
Main objective of the department is to provide qualified economists for positions both in public and private sectors. Because of this, research and education in the department are divided into fields including Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, International Economics, Monetary Theory and Policy, Economic Policy, Economic Theory, Theories of Growth,Financial Markets, Finance and Econometrics.In order to succeed in this department, students should have the ability of analytical thinking.
RECOGNATION of PRIOR LEARNING  
The "Directive on Recognition of Prior Learning", Senate Decision No. 340 issued on July 28, 2023, has been accepted and entered into force regarding the students registered in all programs of Karadeniz Technical University to determine the principles to be followed for the recognition, crediting, and adaptation of the achievements acquired by the students at non-university institutions.



In this Directive,



- recognition of knowledge, skills, and competencies acquired with special interest through an exemption exam to be substituted as program courses,

- recognition of workplace and internship experiences through portfolio evaluation to be substituted as program courses,

- and the crediting of certificates received from accredited institutions regarding students' special interests are covered.


Announcements of courses included in the scope of recognition of prior learning, applications, and evaluation will be made on the dates specified in the academic calendar.
Recognition of prior learning will offer numerous benefits to our students and employers. For our students, increasing professional development and mobility in the labour market, preventing repetition of education and waste of time, providing early graduation, reducing the cost of learning, encouraging learning, and increasing the student's motivation and self-confidence can be counted among the benefits of recognition of prior learning. From the employers' perspectives, it will contribute to satisfying skill or competence deficiencies in the workplace, reducing the time employees spend outside the workplace for training purposes, and thus using resources more efficiently.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS and REGULATIONS  
The study period is eight semesters and can be extended to a maximum of 12 semesters. By the end of the fourth semester at the latest, it is required to be successful in the compulsory and elective courses included in the curriculum and the "Seminar" course, to take the qualifying exam at the end of the fifth semester at the latest, and to complete the thesis study and take the thesis defense examination at the end of the 12th semester at the latest (See KTU Regulations on Graduate Education).

EXAMINATION, ASSESSMENT and GRADING REGULATIONS  
Students are subjected to a midterm exam, term study (project, seminar, quiz, assignment, or a second midterm exam), and final exam for each course. The share of the midterm exam in the final grade of the course is 30%, that of the term study is 20%, and that of the final exam is 50%. All exams are graded out of 100 points. For a student to be considered successful in a course, s/he must get at least a letter grade of "BB" as the end-of-semester grade in that course.

OCCUPATIONAL PROFILES of GRADUATES  
Graduates of this department work as 'economists'. Public institutions and private sector institutions such as the Ministry of Treasury and Finance, Ministry of Trade, Presidency of Strategy and Budget, Capital Markets Board, Competition Authority, Central Bank constitute the main fields of work for the graduates of this department.

DEPARTMENTAL FACILITIES : 
It has a staff composed of 10 professors, 4 associated professor, 5 assistant professors.The department is using the a part of the fifth floor of the first building bloc of the faculty of administrative and economical sciences for academic personnels. A part of the first floor of the second building bloc of the faculty equipped with technological classrooms and compter laboratories are allocated to the public administration. All of the academic personnels have labtobs computers connected to internet
