FOUNDATION & HISTORY
The Department of Geological Engineering was established in 1965 under the Faculty of Basic Science and first certificates were issued in 1970. Graduation period of Geological Engineering Department was initially set to 5 years and the students were given master's degree upon graduation between 1965 and 1970. Since the beginning of 1970, the length of the programme was changed to 4 years graduation period. During this period, Master of science and PhD programmes were given under the Earth Sciences Faculty. The first Master of degree given in 1978 and the first PhD degree in 1980. In 1982 the Institute of Natural and Applied Sciences was established and the department joined this institute. Since then, it has been involved in graduate programmes and concentrate on local and global issues regarding the science of geology.
QUALIFICATION AWARDED
The students who have graduated from the Department of Geological Engineering are awarded with a Master of Science degree in the field of Geology
LEVEL of QUALIFICATION:
Qualifications Frameworks in the European Higher Education Area (QF-EHEA), Level 2
European Qualifications Framework for Lifelong Learning (EQF-LLL), Level 7
MODE of STUDY
Full Time
ADMISSION & REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
1 - Bachelor's Degree in acceptable fields,
2 - Sufficient score (at least 70 out of 100) from the National Academic Staff & Graduate Education Exam (ALES),
3 - English proficiency (500 from TOEFL / 6 from IELTS),
4 - Securing sufficient gross grade (to be calculated as the sum of the from English proficiency test score, CGPA from the bachelor's degree and the ALES exam score, after being multiplied with a ratio) in order to be within the number students to be accepted to the programme.
OBJECTIVE of THE PROGRAMME
Established in a region where engineering problems and metallic mineral deposits occur widely, Department of Geological Engineering carries out a curriculum to educate students to become expert geologists who can take a role in the search and extraction of natural resources, recognise the natural events such as landslides and earthquakes, search for their causes and produce solutions for them. This enables the department to educate expert geologists who have the competency to work individually or in groups to identify geological problems, find solutions for them and apply them with an ethical responsibility.
RECOGNATION of PRIOR LEARNING
The "Directive on Recognition of Prior Learning", Senate Decision No. 340 issued on July 28, 2023, has been accepted and entered into force regarding the students registered in all programs of Karadeniz Technical University to determine the principles to be followed for the recognition, crediting, and adaptation of the achievements acquired by the students at non-university institutions.

In this Directive,

- recognition of knowledge, skills, and competencies acquired with special interest through an exemption exam to be substituted as program courses,
- recognition of workplace and internship experiences through portfolio evaluation to be substituted as program courses,
- and the crediting of certificates received from accredited institutions regarding students' special interests are covered.

Announcements of courses included in the scope of recognition of prior learning, applications, and evaluation will be made on the dates specified in the academic calendar. Recognition of prior learning will offer numerous benefits to our students and employers. For our students, increasing professional development and mobility in the labour market, preventing repetition of education and waste of time, providing early graduation, reducing the cost of learning, encouraging learning, and increasing the student's motivation and self-confidence can be counted among the benefits of recognition of prior learning. From the employers' perspectives, it will contribute to satisfying skill or competence deficiencies in the workplace, reducing the time employees spend outside the workplace for training purposes, and thus using resources more efficiently.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS and REGULATIONS
To be able to secure the Master of science degree in the field of Geological Engineering, the students are required to;
(a) have passed a total of 21 credits (60 ETCS) courses in the curiculum with a grade of at least CC,
(b) have achieved a cumulative gross point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00,
(c) prepared a master thesis, submitted and successfully defended with a passing grade.
KTU Graduate Education Regulations
EXAMINATION, ASSESSMENT and GRADING REGULATIONS
The examination, assessment and grading regulations have been set up for the university by the University Senate and the Department of Geology is bound by these regulations. Each course is assessed via a midterm exam, a second mid-term exam composed of quizzes, homeworks and assignments, and a final end-of-term exam, with contributions of 30%, 20% and 50% respectively. The marking is made out of 100. Grades of 90-100 is assigned a letter grade of AA, 85-89 BA, 80-84 BB, 75-79 CB, 70-74 CC, 60-69 DC, 50-59 DD, 40-49 FD and 0-39 FF. The AA is the highest grade and has a grade credit of 4.00, BA 3.5, BB 3.0, CB 2.5, CC 2.0, DC 1.5, DD 1.0, FD 0.5 and FF 0.0. Grades of AA to CC mean pass, and the rest fail. The details given for each course in the programme include the detailed assessment methods together with a description of the second mid-term exam.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS
The students who have successfully completed a minimum of 21 local credits (equivalant to 60 ECTS credits) from thought courses delivered within the graduate programme of the department and in related fields, achieved a CGPA of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and prepared and successfully defended a thesis are given Master's Degree in GEOLOGICAL ENGINEERING.
OCCUPATIONAL PROFILES of GRADUATES
The graduates of the geological engineering department has many opportunities of employment in a varitey of state and private companies. The main state companies where they can work include the State Water Works, General Directorate of Motorways, Mineral Research and Exploration Institute, Turkish Petroleum and municipalities. Currently, majority of the graduates find jobs in private sector engaged mainly in mineral exploration and extraction companies as well construction companies working on tunnels, roadworks and dams. There are also cases where the graduates setup up their own jobs manly in the field of drilling and soil investigation
