FOUNDATION & HISTORY  
Formally established in 1993, the Department started to offer B.A. in English Language and Literature in the 1999-2000 academic year with 41 students. The medium of instruction is English. The educational duration is 1+4 years. The beginners take a one-year preparatory language course in our department and then take a four-year undergraduate education. In the 2004-2005 academic year, the Department started to offer an English Teacher Certificate Program. Apart from regular classes, evening program was introduced in the 2009-2010 academic year. The Department started to offer a teachers' training program in the 2004-2005 academic year. The Department also offers MA in Linguistics and English Literature and culture, and PhD in Applied Linguistics as well as English and American Literatures.
QUALIFICATION AWARDED  
Graduating students are offered BA diploma in English Language and Literature.

ADMISSION & REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS  
1 - Those who have fulfilled the requirements of the Turkish Higher Educational Council and who achieved the required score from the National University Entrance and Placement Exam (LYS) are admitted to the Department.
OBJECTIVE of THE PROGRAMME  
Our program offers courses in English language, English literature, American culture and literature, linguistics, applied linguistics, English language teaching, teaching English as a foreign language, assessment and evaluation, research methods in education. The students gain skills in language teaching, translation, and reading literature critically. Our department works in collaboration with United States Cultural relations office in order to raise intercultural understanding. Our students also go to the United States to improve their skills through the Student Leadership Program and Fulbright Scholarships. Our students participate in Erasmus program successfully and gain experiences in living and studying abroad.
RECOGNATION of PRIOR LEARNING  
The "Directive on Recognition of Prior Learning", Senate Decision No. 340 issued on July 28, 2023, has been accepted and entered into force regarding the students registered in all programs of Karadeniz Technical University to determine the principles to be followed for the recognition, crediting, and adaptation of the achievements acquired by the students at non-university institutions.

In this Directive,

- recognition of knowledge, skills, and competencies acquired with special interest through an exemption exam to be substituted as program courses,
- recognition of workplace and internship experiences through portfolio evaluation to be substituted as program courses,
- and the crediting of certificates received from accredited institutions regarding students' special interests are covered.

Announcements of courses included in the scope of recognition of prior learning, applications, and evaluation will be made on the dates specified in the academic calendar. Recognition of prior learning will offer numerous benefits to our students and employers. For our students, increasing professional development and mobility in the labour market, preventing repetition of education and waste of time, providing early graduation, reducing the cost of learning, encouraging learning, and increasing the student's motivation and self-confidence can be counted among the benefits of recognition of prior learning. From the employers' perspectives, it will contribute to satisfying skill or competence deficiencies in the workplace, reducing the time employees spend outside the workplace for training purposes, and thus using resources more efficiently.

OCCUPATIONAL PROFILES of GRADUATES  
The graduates can work as teachers of English in primary, secondary and high schools; as lecturers of English in private and state-run universities; as research assistants in similar academic institutions; as guides, interpreters; and as staff in the import-export departments of private companies. Some of our students have also gained job opportunities in the tourism and aviation industry as well as business.
