FOUNDATION & HISTORY  
Founded in September 1963, the department of Mathematics is one of the oldest departments of the Faculty of basic sciences, currently known as Faculty of Letters and Sciences in the university. The department offered only service courses to engineering departments until 1971 before the official start its own undergraduate program. In addition to undergraduate program, M.S. and Ph. D. programs initiated during the education term of 1973-1974. Since 2008, all students were being required to go through English preparation program offered by the school of foreign Language unless they pass the exemption test. At the same time a second undergraduate program, known as second education, which takes place during the evening hours, has been started.

The department employs seven professors, four associate professors, six assistant professors, eight Lecturers, and eight research assistants. Currently the department has 376 undergraduate students in the first education program and 171 students in the second education program.
QUALIFICATION AWARDED  
The students who have graduated from the Department of Mathematics is awarded with a Bachelor's degree in the field of Mathematics.

ADMISSION & REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS  
1 - High school diploma,
2 - Obtaining the required grade from National University Entrance and Placement Exam (ÖSS),
3 - Placement certificate issued by the Student Selection and Placement Centre (OYS),
4 - English proficiency (500 from TOEFL / 6 from IELTS).
OBJECTIVE of THE PROGRAMME  
The department with 38 years of experience in teaching and research aims to provide high quality service to the society with its highly talented work force. The department carries out its activities under the regulations of tighter Education committee and responsible to Deans' office and Rectorate. Among the partners of the department are TUBİTAK, DPT, related university departments, research centers and institutions.
RECOGNATION of PRIOR LEARNING  
The "Directive on Recognition of Prior Learning", Senate Decision No. 340 issued on July 28, 2023, has been accepted and entered into force regarding the students registered in all programs of Karadeniz Technical University to determine the principles to be followed for the recognition, crediting, and adaptation of the achievements acquired by the students at non-university institutions.

In this Directive,

- recognition of knowledge, skills, and competencies acquired with special interest through an exemption exam to be substituted as program courses,
- recognition of workplace and internship experiences through portfolio evaluation to be substituted as program courses,
- and the crediting of certificates received from accredited institutions regarding students' special interests are covered.

Announcements of courses included in the scope of recognition of prior learning, applications, and evaluation will be made on the dates specified in the academic calendar. Recognition of prior learning will offer numerous benefits to our students and employers. For our students, increasing professional development and mobility in the labour market, preventing repetition of education and waste of time, providing early graduation, reducing the cost of learning, encouraging learning, and increasing the student's motivation and self-confidence can be counted among the benefits of recognition of prior learning. From the employers' perspectives, it will contribute to satisfying skill or competence deficiencies in the workplace, reducing the time employees spend outside the workplace for training purposes, and thus using resources more efficiently.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS and REGULATIONS  
To be able to secure the bachelor's degree in the field of Mathematics (and thus title of Mathematicians) the students are required to

(a) have passed all courses in the curiculum with a grade of at least DC,

(b) have achieved a cumulative gross point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00,

(c) prepared, submitted and successfully defended a graduation thesis with a passing grade.
EXAMINATION, ASSESSMENT and GRADING REGULATIONS  
The examination, assessment and grading regulations have been set up for the university by the University Senate and the Department of Mathematics is bound by these regulations. Each course is assessed via a midterm exam, a second mid-term exam composed of quizzes, homeworks and assignments, and a final end-of-term exam, with contributions of 30%, 20% and 50% respectively. The marking is made out of 100.

Grades of 81-100 is assigned a letter grade of AA,

76-80 BA,

70-75 BB,

60-69 CB,

50-59 CC,

45-49 DC,

40-44 DD,

30-39 FD and

0-29 FF.

The AA is the highest grade and has a grade credit of 4.00, BA 3.5, BB 3.0, CB 2.5, CC 2.0, DC 1.5, DD 1.0, FD 0.5 and FF 0.0. Grades of AA to CC are pass, DD to FF fail, and DC is conditional pass and requires a CGPA of at least 2.0 for that term. The details given for each course in the programme include the detailed assessment methods together with a description of the second mid-term exam.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS  
The graduation requirements for the Department of Mathematics are the same as the qualification requirements and regulations. There is no additional requirement to secure the Bachelor's Degree provided that the students have passed all the courses in the curriculum with at least a DC grade, had a cumulative gross point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00.
OCCUPATIONAL PROFILES of GRADUATES  
The graduates get jobs in a variety of state and private sectors, besides serving as teachers in the secondary education programs.
ACCESS to FURTHER STUDIES  
The students who have successfully graduated from the department may apply to post graduate programmes in the field of mathematics here and in other universities, as well as other fields accepting student from the field of mathematics.

Department of Mathematics has its own building and the facilities of the department and laboratories are as follows: -classrooms for a total of 225 people -Computer room with 30 people.
