FOUNDATION & HISTORY  
KTU Faculty of Communication, Journalism Department has been established in 2010 as the first of the region. With an awareness of its strategic position, the programme offers students the opportunity to explore the theoretical and practical aspects of these related disciplines.
QUALIFICATION AWARDED  
The students who have successfully completed all of the thought courses of the programme with 240 ECTS credits and achieved a CGPA of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 are given Bachelor's Degree in JOURNALISM

ADMISSION & REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS  
1 - High school diploma, 2 - Obtaining the required grade from National University Entrance and Placement Exam (ÖSYS),
OBJECTIVE of THE PROGRAMME  
In the course planning of the department, a balanced approach considering both theoretical and applied knowledge is preferred. In other words, besides learning a relevant and contemporary conceptual background, students will have several opportunities to prepare news, making interviews and writing critics. Department offers a wide spectrum of courses including all processes in the stages of research, planning, application and evaluating in order to extend students? abilities in preparing and writing news.
After one year of English education, The Department of Journalism includes eight semesters of education. As an interdisciplinary program, The Department of Journalism aims to create a social sciences background with economics, law, sociology, philosophy, social psychology, cultural anthropology , politics, and communication theory courses during first and second years. In the third year, students start taking more area specific lessons such as investigative journalism, media analysis, gathering and writing news, design, human rights and media, media and everyday life.
RECOGNATION of PRIOR LEARNING  
The "Directive on Recognition of Prior Learning", Senate Decision No. 340 issued on July 28, 2023, has been accepted and entered into force regarding the students registered in all programs of Karadeniz Technical University to determine the principles to be followed for the recognition, crediting, and adaptation of the achievements acquired by the students at non-university institutions.

In this Directive,

- recognition of knowledge, skills, and competencies acquired with special interest through an exemption exam to be substituted as program courses,
- recognition of workplace and internship experiences through portfolio evaluation to be substituted as program courses,
- and the crediting of certificates received from accredited institutions regarding students' special interests are covered.

Announcements of courses included in the scope of recognition of prior learning, applications, and evaluation will be made on the dates specified in the academic calendar. Recognition of prior learning will offer numerous benefits to our students and employers. For our students, increasing professional development and mobility in the labour market, preventing repetition of education and waste of time, providing early graduation, reducing the cost of learning, encouraging learning, and increasing the student's motivation and self-confidence can be counted among the benefits of recognition of prior learning. From the employers' perspectives, it will contribute to satisfying skill or competence deficiencies in the workplace, reducing the time employees spend outside the workplace for training purposes, and thus using resources more efficiently.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS and REGULATIONS  
To be able to secure the bachelor's degree in the field of Journalism the students are required to (a) have passed all courses in the curiculum with a grade of at least DC form the, (b) have achieved a cumulative gross point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00, (c) prepared a graduation thesis, submitted and successfully defended with a passing grade.
EXAMINATION, ASSESSMENT and GRADING REGULATIONS  
The examination, assessment and grading regulations have been set up for the university by the University Senate and the Department of Journalism is bound by these regulations. Each course is assessed via a midterm exam and a final end-of-term exam, with contributions of 50% and 50% respectively. The marking is made out of 100. Grades of AA to CC are pass, DD to FF fail, and DC is conditional pass and requires a CGPA of at least 2.0 for that term. The details given for each course in the programme include the detailed assessment methods together with a description of the second mid-term exam.
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS  
The students who have successfully completed all of the thought courses of the programme with 240 ECTS credits and achieved a CGPA of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 are given Bachelor's Degree in Journalizm.
OCCUPATIONAL PROFILES of GRADUATES  
Graduates of the department can work at different positions such as correspondent, editor, interviewer, columnist, press consultant, internet journalist, media planner, coordinator, in daily national newspapers, news channels, news departments of channels, magazines, local press, non profit organizations, advertising agencies, governmental organizations, press and information sector.
ACCESS to FURTHER STUDIES  
If the students completed with success their licence education and getting enogh poit at ALES examination, knowing enoguh English, They can start post gradution education.

The graduation degree in Journalism programme offers the student the opportunity to prepare himself/herself for Master's studies in any university, in any of the three areas ? Journalism, Public Relations and Sociology. The rich background that students acquire in written press, television journalism and internet journalism affords them a good platform for the continuation of their studies on the Master?s and Doctoral?s degree.
