FOUNDATION & HISTORY  
Secondary Education Social Sciences Department has its roots in 1982, the Branch gained its current name in June 1998 due to a new organization on Univercity systems. The Department which gives Turkish Literature and language, History and Geography education at master (both with thesis and without thesis) and undergraduate degrees, accepted its first students on master programmes without thesis in history and geography education branches at 2001-2002 fall educational midterm, and graduated these students in 2002-2003 educational term. Currently there are no undergraduate programs for Literature and History education branches, but Geography education is being taught with a 5 year undergraduate program. First students of this program are enrolled in 2008-2009 educational term.
QUALIFICATION AWARDED  
Students that succesfully complete the program are awarded with a diploma announcing them as Geography Teachers

OBJECTIVE of THE PROGRAMME  
The main motivation behind this program is to train Geography Teachers. For this purpose the department teaches its students to become skilled and thriving teachers.
RECOGNATION of PRIOR LEARNING  
The "Directive on Recognition of Prior Learning", Senate Decision No. 340 issued on July 28, 2023, has been accepted and entered into force regarding the students registered in all programs of Karadeniz Technical University to determine the principles to be followed for the recognition, crediting, and adaptation of the achievements acquired by the students at non-university institutions.

In this Directive,

- recognition of knowledge, skills, and competencies acquired with special interest through an exemption exam to be substituted as program courses,
- recognition of workplace and internship experiences through portfolio evaluation to be substituted as program courses,
- and the crediting of certificates received from accredited institutions regarding students' special interests are covered.

Announcements of courses included in the scope of recognition of prior learning, applications, and evaluation will be made on the dates specified in the academic calendar. Recognition of prior learning will offer numerous benefits to our students and employers. For our students, increasing professional development and mobility in the labour market, preventing repetition of education and waste of time, providing early graduation, reducing the cost of learning, encouraging learning, and increasing the student's motivation and self-confidence can be counted among the benefits of recognition of prior learning. From the employers' perspectives, it will contribute to satisfying skill or competence deficiencies in the workplace, reducing the time employees spend outside the workplace for training purposes, and thus using resources more efficiently.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS and REGULATIONS  
To be able to secure the bachelor's degree in the Geography Teacher Education, the students are required to (a) have passed all courses in the curiculum with a grade of at least DC form the, (b) have achieved a cumulative gross point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00, (c) succesfull completion of the stage period in teaching.
EXAMINATION, ASSESSMENT and GRADING REGULATIONS  
Every term, students are subjected to various mid-term studies (mid-term exams, presentation, project, seminars, quizzes, assignment, laboratory practices, etc.,) and end-of-term examinations. The contribution of both mid-term and end-of-term examinations to overall score is 50%. Marks are assigned out of 100 points. In order to attend to the end-of-term examination of a course, students must attend at least 70% of its theoretical part and if there are practical and/or laboratory sessions, they must attend 80% of them. It is required to obtain 40 out of 100 points from end-of-term examination of a course regardless of its midterm examination mark. In calculating the end-of-term mark, if a class size is more than 10, ?Norm-Referenced Assessment System? is employed, whereas if a class size is less than 10, ?Criterion-Referenced Assessment System? is employed. ?Students are regarded as successful if they get any of such scores as AA, BA, BB, BC or CC. In the case of having DC, which is a conditional mark, students can pass the course as long as they have a CGPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0 for that term. Students having the marks from DD to FF fail. Students can take make-up examinations from all courses that they have failed at the end of the each term as long as these courses are belong to that term. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS  
The graduation requirements for the Department of Geography Education are the same as the qualification requirements and regulations. There is no additional requirement to secure the Bachelor's Degree provided that the students have passed all the courses in the curriculum with at least a DC grade, had a cumulative gross point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00, and completed the compulsory practical placement period.
OCCUPATIONAL PROFILES of GRADUATES  
Gradueates can become Geography Teachers in high schools. It is possible for the graduates to become teachers in both private and public schools.
ACCESS to FURTHER STUDIES  
Graduates, assuming that they meet requred degrees in ALES exam, can enroll in graduate programs regarding their field of expertise.

DEPARTMENTAL FACILITIES : 
Secondary Social Sciences Education department has the following resources for each Social Science branch that falls under its domain; A spereate class for each branch that is formed in 'U' style, computers, projectors and other such multimedia equipment in every class. The department also uses various education methods in its lessons, and while educational activities are being held, attention is being paid to department-environment participation.
