| Karadeniz Technical University, Department of Sociology was established in 2008 and has started training of sociology in the academic year 2012-2013, it still continues training the program. Department of Sociology has got sufficient infrastructure and means to give a modern academic education and training which is the main goal of the department. Department of Sociology, service to provide education and training within the framework of the daytime education to local and foreign students, and it has not got yet the evening program. Postgraduate level of education is among the objectives of the department. | | | QUALIFICATION AWARDED | | | The students who are graduated are awarded with BACHELOR'S DEGREE. | | | LEVEL of QUALIFICATION: | | | First Cycle Degree | | | MODE of STUDY | | | Full Time | | | ADMISSION & REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS | | | 1 - High School Diploma, 2 - A sufficient grade from Higher Education Council's University Student Selection and Placement Exam 3 - Foreign students will be accepted according to the allocated quota and conditions which are determined by KTU with the YOK's permission. | | | OBJECTIVE of THE PROGRAMME | | | Karadeniz Technical University, Department of Sociology has accepted its first student groups at 2012 as 47 person. As of the 2013-2014 academic year Department of Sociology has got totally 100 students including first and second grade. There are 1 Prof., 2 Associate Prof., 4 Assistant Prof, 1 Instructor, and five research assistants in the department. Sociology program, provides a four-year training consisting of eight semesters. Students are required to attend according to the regulations in force and the criterion of passing course is applied at the department. Department of Sociology has increased the number of academic staff in the framework of the aim of rapidly institutionalization.Studies are carried out to open the masters program in the department where the theoretical and practical curriculum applied at the undergraduate level. The main objective of the program is to train competent and well-equipped sociologists at the national and international level. | | | RECOGNATION of PRIOR LEARNING | | The "Directive on Recognition of Prior Learning", Senate Decision No. 340 issued on July 28, 2023, has been accepted and entered into force regarding the students registered in all programs of Karadeniz Technical University to determine the principles to be followed for the recognition, crediting, and adaptation of the achievements acquired by the students at non-university institutions.
In this Directive,
- recognition of knowledge, skills, and competencies acquired with special interest through an exemption exam to be substituted as program courses,
- recognition of workplace and internship experiences through portfolio evaluation to be substituted as program courses,
- and the crediting of certificates received from accredited institutions regarding students' special interests are covered.
Announcements of courses included in the scope of recognition of prior learning, applications, and evaluation will be made on the dates specified in the academic calendar.
Recognition of prior learning will offer numerous benefits to our students and employers. For our students, increasing professional development and mobility in the labour market, preventing repetition of education and waste of time, providing early graduation, reducing the cost of learning, encouraging learning, and increasing the student's motivation and self-confidence can be counted among the benefits of recognition of prior learning. From the employers' perspectives, it will contribute to satisfying skill or competence deficiencies in the workplace, reducing the time employees spend outside the workplace for training purposes, and thus using resources more efficiently. | | | QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS and REGULATIONS | | | To achieve minimum 2.0 GPA out of 4.00 through taking defined passing grades for successful complete of all courses which are placed in the program (totally 240 AKTS). | | | EXAMINATION, ASSESSMENT and GRADING REGULATIONS | | | The students are evaluated by means of a midterm exam/ a term Project (seminar, quiz, assignment, or a second midterm exam) and a final exam for each course. The contribution of each evaluation method is as follows: midterm exam-50 %, and final exam-50 %. All exams are graded out of 100 points. Students are required to take at least 45 from the final exam. A student who has scored either of the letter grades (AA),(BA),(BB),(CB) and (CC) is regarded successful for the courses. The students can take exams for each semester. Each student has to register for classes at the beginning of the term and has to attend at least 70 % of lectures for each course and at least 80 % of all seminars. Midterm exams and final exams are done at the dates announced in advance. For grading procedures and further information, please visit the related website at http://ogrweb.ktu.edu.tr/ogrweb . | | | GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS | | | The requirements outlined above under the Regulations Regarding the Degree are adequate. | | | OCCUPATIONAL PROFILES of GRADUATES | | | Ministry of Education, the General Directorate of Social Services, the Ministry of Labour and Social Security, Statistical Institute of Turkey, The State Planning Organization, Ministry of Family and Social Policies, Food, Agriculture and Livestock Ministry, the Ministry of Justice, Ministry of Public Works, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Culture and Tourism Ministry of Municipalities, Credit and Hostels Institution, research departments and staff offices of the ministries, private educational institutions, written and visual media, academic institutions, and private research companies forms the main work areas of the graduates from Department of Sociology. | | | ACCESS to FURTHER STUDIES | | | Students who have finished undergraduate education and had valid ALES results could apply for MA and Ph.D. studies. Those who succeeded in departmental interview could start graduate studies. | | | CONTACT INFORMATION | | | | | DEPARTMENTAL FACILITIES : | | | Department of Sociology is located in the School of Humanities and Letters Building and has the following facilities. Currently an academic staff of 1 Prof., 2 associate professor, 4 assistant professors, 1 university lecturer and 5 research assistants work at the department. The department has 8 offices for faculty members, two classrooms, one technology classroom and an archive room. |
